Friends star Mathew Perry was found dead in his Los Angeles residence on October 28, 2023. The actor's autopsy report has revealed the cause of death as "acute effects of ketamine."

What is Ketamine?

Also known as Ketalar, Ketamine is used by doctors as an anaesthetic drug during surgeries so that the patient does not feel the pain.

Medical usage of Ketamine

As per the Pacific Neuroscience Institute, “Ketamine therapy is used to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, end-of-life distress, chronic pain, drug/alcohol problems, and more.”

Illegal use of Ketamine

The drug is available on a doctor’s prescription in the US. However, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's report acknowledges its misuse for recreational purposes.

How is Ketamine abused illegally?

People misuse the drug by sniffing it, injecting it, mixing it in drinks or smoking it with other substances.

Side effects and overdose

High dosages can lead to fatal respiratory problems as it can drastically slow down breathing. Common side effects of Ketamine misuse include weakness and spasms in the muscles.
