A nebula is a giant cloud of dust, gas, and smoke in space that is emitted during the explosion of a dying star or the formation of a new star.

Here is a look at 10 mesmerising images of nebulae shared by NASA.

This captivating image shows a small region of the nebula Westerhout 5, which lies about 7,000 light-years from Earth.

This stunning image features a star-forming nebula in the constellation Aquila, which produces a particular kind of massive star known as a B-type star. 

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured this striking image of the N44 nebula featuring glowing hydrogen gas, dust and massive stars. 

This breathtaking image taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope shows the Cone Nebula (NGC 2264), a giant pillar of gas and dust.
