Video games impact on children: UNICEF study findings may surprise you

Video games can have a positive impact on children if they are designed right, according to a study.

The study found that well-designed video games can help children feel a sense of control, choice, achievement, and emotional regulation.

They can also foster connections with others and allow for exploration and self-expression.

However, games need to contain certain features to support one or more of these aspects.

To support the sense of autonomy, a game could put them in control, allow them to make decisions about gameplay, and encourage them to develop their own strategies for progress.

To support creativity, a game could allow them to freely explore and solve problems or create their own characters or narratives.

Not all games have a positive impact on children. UNICEF said game designers must consider children's needs and design games that support those needs.

UNICEF produced this study in partnership with the University of Sheffield, New York University, City University New York and the Queensland University of Technology.
