University of Surrey shares list of what to eat and avoid to perform best during exams

If you are a student whose examination is round the corner, then you need to take extra care of your health and your food choices to stay healthy and strong during exams. To help you choose what to eat and avoid to perform best during exams, the University of Surrey has shared a list.

Eat proper meals: For every student, it is important to eat proper meals. Meals with a slow release of carbohydrates will help fuel your revision. If you study during the day, have a good breakfast and lunch. If you’re a night owl, have a good lunch and dinner.

Keep hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, mainly water, throughout the day to keep yourself hydrated.

Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables: It is always a good option to choose fruits and vegetables over unhealthy snacks like crips, chocolate, chips or fizzy drinks.

Watch your coffee intake: Too much caffeine is bad for your health, as it dehydrates you. Caffeine acts as a stimulant and may aid concentration in small doses (the equivalent of one to two cups). Drinking more than this can cause palpitations and may disturb your sleep.

Try to avoid energy drinks: It is advisable to avoid energy drinks that are high in sugar and caffeine. They can give you an instant buzz but are a poor substitute for proper food and fluid.

Avoid too many ‘treats’: Eat healthy food and do not overindulge in fatty foods, sugary snacks (crisps and chocolate), or fizzy drinks.

Don’t overdo the alcohol: Students nowadays are into hard drinks. But it should be kept in mind that drinking it might make you feel more relaxed, but alcoholic drinks dehydrate you, disturb your sleep and can wreck your concentration the next day.
